Born in 1973, Sifu James Strider has been practicing Chinese martial arts since the age of 14. Starting off with classical WuShu in the UK, he was fortunate enough to have been exposed to Chen style Taijiquan at the age of 16, learning the Chen village Lao Jia Yilu and Erlu sets over 4 years.
Over the next 12 years Sifu James trained in Wing Chun, Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Eskrima and Western Boxing, before finally returning to his Chen Style Taijiquan practice when he met and trained under Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang for 16 days in 2004 in Holland, learning his Chen Style Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan sets of 24, 36 movements and the complete Hunyuan Neigong system.
With his passion for Chen Taijiquan reignited, Sifu James met and trained with a new group led by Master Chen Liangshen on a weekly basis in Amsterdam, whilst running his own classes in Utrecht and other locations in Holland. He also attended a 14 day workshop in Paris in 2005 held by Master Pang Houchen where James further refined his knowledge in the 24, 36 sets and the Hunyuan Neigong system taught by Grandmaster Feng.
It was under the invitation of Master Chen Liangshen a year later in 2006 that Master Chen Zhonghua came to Europe for the first time and held a workshop in Holland, primarily teaching the Hunyuan system but also introducing Sifu James to the Practical Method of Grandmaster Hong Junsheng for the first time.
In 2007 Sifu James was invited to Beijing to celebrate Grandmaster Feng’s 80th birthday at the 1st International Hunyuan Conference. Having gone alone, Master Chen Zhonghua took Sifu James under his wing and introduced him to his Disciples that had come from the USA and Canada to join in on this great occasion.
Sifu James then stayed on another 3 days in Beijing for a Hunyuan workshop held by Master Pang Houchen, also having the opportunity to visit Grandmaster Feng’s school there.
Sifu James has been practicing the Practical Method since 2006, becoming a 20th Generation Chen Style Disciple under Master Chen Zhonghua in 2013 after having followed him around the globe, training under him in Holland, The Czech Republic, Singapore, Australia and China.
As of November 2019, Sifu James has completed an 18 month intensive Fulltime Study Program under Master Chen Zhonghua and Head Instructor Chen Xu at Daqingshan, China. During this time he assisted Master Chen Zhonghua with workshops in the cities of Dong Yin, Xi’ An, Liuzhou and Yangzhou, whilst also completing the Erlu/Pao Chui (Cannon Fist) 64 and Jian (Sword) sets of the Practical Method.
Sifu James is now located in both Perth, Australia and also Daqingshan, China, teaching, training and working both independently and under the guidance of Master Chen Zhonghua. His roles include being the official International Instructor, Liaison Officer and Director of the International Department on Daqingshan, as well as an International Push Hands referee.
Sifu James is now available for weekly lessons in Perth and Workshops around SE Asia and the Oceania Region.
